Student journalists have become a significant part of high school and college campuses. Students are reporting some of the most complex and sensitive issues, such as shootings, religion, politics, or local issues going around. Why is it important to hold these journalists accountable? In Georgia, they are mandating an anonymous reporting system, meaning that every journalist who reports something or puts it in a school newspaper has to stay anonymous. Holding student journalists accountable now involves setting strict guidelines, limiting them on what they can report, and providing ethical practices. Training a student journalist gives them a better chance at going to college or writing for an actual newspaper because they have received the right training. Why limit journalists then? Limiting a student journalist’s ability to get as much information means no one at the school can actually dig deep into the world of journalism. I agree with the fact that student journalists and journalists for an actual newspaper are not the same thing, but how can a student journalist know what it is like to be a real-life journalist if they are restricted on what they can write about? This argument is something many students can agree on, but administrators want their schools to be the best they can be, and letting students write about what they want does not look good for a school. Not only writing but also podcasting can be highly restricted at some schools. Just like writing an article, you have to watch what you say in a podcast. A podcast I agree should be restricted. Like an article, you should be able to say what you want, but a podcast can get around more than an article. It is harder to go anonymous through a podcast, especially a school podcast, because you have to show your face, and everyone will know who is doing that podcast, which could involve you getting attacked on social media or much worse. So yes, holding student journalists accountable is not a bad idea but I disagree with the restrictions, and I think they should be able to write about or say what they want, but being anonymous would not be a bad idea.
