School board decisions that shape student life in Covington. School board decisions shaping student life include the national search for a new superintendent, which strives to align leadership with community vision, and the ongoing master facilities plan process, which is currently exploring alternatives to a previously proposed elementary school consolidation. The changes to the academic policy in June 2025 is the board enforces alterations to promotion criteria for second-grade students, changes in elective credit (e.g., financial literacy proficiency exams) and graded assessment height limit. There was also high-school exam policy changes which include: the board approving final exams constituting 20% of grade in high school courses, midterms being non-existent, and simplify course load requirements for seniors to qualify for shortened schedules. The district handbook which is governed by board policy outlines the Uniform Discipline Code, positive behavior supports (PBIS), and sets expectations for student conduct, dress, attendance, etc. The board supports a Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC) that gives students direct say in policy discussions and initiatives. The board accepted a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the teachers and school employees’ federation in the month of August 2024. The purpose of that process impacts staff stability and thus student experience. Through the capital and facility investment program, student/teacher ratios and classroom environments have been impacted like reducing class sizes and making facility investment a priority. I believe the student life is greatly impacted by the school board decisions. I believe this because when a decision is made all student have to abide by it and can’t have a say. They are told what to do by who leader of their board is, obey their decision, and follow it despite what they believe the decision should be or changes that should be made.
