Christmas Tree- Christmas trees first appeared in America in the 1830s in Pennsylvania. The tradition had been brought by German settlers who believed trees that stayed green all year kept evil spirits away. However, many Americans did not accept this tradition because the trees were seen as pagan symbols. In early America, decorating for Christmas was considered making a mockery of the church. The first displayed Christmas tree in America is reported to be in the 1830s. With the help of magazines, Christmas trees were popular by the 1870s in the United States.

Christmas Caroling- Early carols were written for the purpose of telling the story of Jesus’ birth and were passed down from generation to generation. The carols written in the 4th and 5th centuries were often of somber tone. Saint Francis of Assisi is usually credited with incorporating more upbeat carols into Christmas church services. The concept of caroling became a popular way to spread the story of Jesus’ birth throughout the community.

Presents- When Jesus was born, the Three Magi brought him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. To symbolize these gifts, we give our friends and family presents that are special to them and to us.

Santa Claus- Santa Claus is modeled after Saint Nicholas, a monk who was the patron Saint of Children in the 3rd century. St. Nicholas was known for his kindness and gave his life to traveling to help the poor. As St. Nicholas became more popular, he was known as the protector of children. St. Nicholas’ nickname in Dutch was Sinter Klaas; that is where the name Santa Claus was derived from.
