Across the Gulf Coast region, there have been many sudden cases of Vibrio vulnificus infections.
Many officials and authorities have been warning residents and tourists about this new bacteria.
They have been asking them to be mindful before entering warm brackish waters so that they can
avoid any dangers. While infections are still very rare, a person can get this illness by swimming in the ocean with an open wound or by eating contaminated shellfish. Lately there have been cases where Louisiana residents who have traveled to Florida come home with sickness. These infections have caused hospitalization. There have been 4 deaths and 17 confirmed cases in Louisiana. Even though Vibrio vulnificus is still extremely rare, it has caused a rise in both infections and deaths this year compared to previous years in all Gulf Coast states. Vibrio vulnificus can destroy tissue very quickly and can sometimes lead to sepsis or death within days.
When traveling and swimming in warm brackish waters, it is wise to be mindful of this infection so that you can be aware of the dangers.
