With the holidays right around the corner, turkeys and pies flying off the shelf, and spiced scents filling the cool air, I thought…what better way to get in the holiday spirit than to talk about Thanksgiving traditions!
We all have something we look forward to during the holiday season, whether it be a special dish you eat, an activity you do with your family, or a place you travel to. I thought it would be a fun idea to see what my peers do for Thanksgiving, so I asked students around campus what their favorite Thanksgiving traditions were. I included a few of my favorite responses down below, so take a look and Happy Thanksgiving!
First, let’s start off with some of the favorite dishes that people look forward to on Thanksgiving, because what’s Thanksgiving without the food?!
“Eating good food with family and friends is one of my favorite traditions. I love to eat pies!”
“My favorite tradition is sneaking in the kitchen with my siblings and cousins and taking some yeast rolls right after they get out of the oven and are nice and hot!”
“My mom makes a sweet potato souffle every year!”
“Eating green bean casserole is my favorite tradition!”
Out of all the responses I got, my favorites were the ones that talked about the special and unique activities people did with their family during Thanksgiving. Here are a few of them:
“My favorite thanksgiving tradition is doing sack races!”
“My absolute favorite tradition with my dad is when we throw 1/3 of the leftovers at the cook.”
“My dad and I go duck hunting really early thanksgiving morning and come back with just enough time to shower before the meal.”
“I always bake a new dessert from my Mary Berry Cookbook every Thanksgiving.”
“My family always walks to Starbucks on Thanksgiving morning while the turkey is in the oven.”
Family and Giving Thanks
Even though the food and activities are so fun, when we look at what really counts, being with family and expressing our appreciation and thankfulness for all that God has blessed us with is the most important. Below are a few student responses about being with family and giving thanks:
“My favorite thanksgiving traditions are getting to see my family from all over.”
“Every year I go with my family to Gatlinburg, Tennessee!”
”Being together with my friends and family is my favorite part about Thanksgiving.”
“Going to my grandparents house is my favorite thing!”
“Spending time with my cousins!”
“Eating with my family and friends! We all share lots of laughs and memories, and spending time with the people I love is always a great time!”
“We gather around in a circle, hold hands, and tell each other what we are grateful for.”
Thank you to everyone who gave an answer for their favorite Thanksgiving traditions! I hope you all have a great break and a very happy Thanksgiving!
“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”
